In May we wrote about the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve: without repetition, most of what was learned is gone within the first day. In LMS.Knopka, lessons are followed by quizzes, and at the end comes certification.
But a network of locations has a separate question that training alone doesn't solve: how to make sure that a person who finished a course three months ago still remembers what they need to remember.
An ordinary certification answers a different question. It checks that a person passed a test now. It says nothing about what will be left a month after certification — and for a network of dozens of locations, that is exactly the risk: the employee knew the material at the exam, but forgot it by the time the knowledge was needed on the floor, with a client.
one test checks the test, not memory
A one-time certification confirms that on a particular day a person managed to recall the material — often because they had specially reviewed it the day before. That is closer to an exam than to a check of working competence. The forgetting curve works so that knowledge peaks right after preparing for the check, and then it fades like any training that hasn't been reinforced.
If certification is needed not for show, but to understand which employees of the network really know the material, it has to check not the fact of passing, but what stays in memory over time.
how to set this up differently
Instead of one big certification once a quarter — the same principles of spaced repetition and the testing effect that work in training, but stretched over time after the first certification, and not only before it. A short repeat check a week after the main certification. Another one a month later. Another one a quarter later. Each is shorter than the previous one: the goal is not to retrain, but to check that the connection in memory still holds.
It is important that the questions in the repeat checks do not match the questions of the main certification word for word — otherwise the employee recalls not the material, but the wording of the right answer they saw last time. Each repeat check should require recalling a principle and applying it to a new situation, not recognizing a familiar phrase.
practice matters more than the test
A test on a screen is not the only or the best way to check that an employee remembers the material. For a network of locations, a practical check is just as telling: going through a real situation from the floor, a short role-play with a client, a mentor watching how the employee acts rather than what they answer on a form. It is slower than an online test, but this kind of check catches the gap between “knows in theory” and “applies in the moment”, which a test on a screen does not see.
where to start
This is how repeat checks are worth rolling out: starting with the roles where an employee's mistake is immediately visible to the client. Results with figures will not appear right away — this works over time, and by definition the result cannot be seen before that time has passed. But the very question “what will be left in memory in a month” already changes how certification is designed: not as a one-off event, but as a process stretched over the whole time a person works in the network.
The foundation for this — quizzes, final certification and certificates with QR verification — is in LMS.Knopka: certification and certificates with QR. A location manager sees in their dashboard which team members have completed courses and certification. On how to build certification levels and what they should open up for an employee, read the article staff certification: how to turn a requirement into a growth path.
The same approach is needed by an online school: if a student gets a certificate, it should mean something. What else matters when choosing a platform is in the article an LMS for an online school: what matters at the start.
frequently asked questions
why isn't one certification enough?
A one-time certification checks that a person managed to recall the material on a particular day — often right after preparing. It says nothing about what will be left in memory in a month.
how often should repeat checks be held?
For example, a week, a month and a quarter after the main certification. Each following check is shorter than the previous one: the goal is to make sure the knowledge holds, not to retrain from scratch.
can a repeat check use the same questions?
Better not. If the questions match word for word, the employee recalls the wording of the answer, not the material. A repeat check should ask to apply a principle to a new situation.
which employees should repeat checks start with?
With the roles where an employee's mistake is immediately visible to the client — that is where the price of forgotten material is highest.
what does LMS.Knopka have for certification?
Quizzes after lessons, final certification, certificates with QR verification and a location manager's dashboard showing which team members have completed courses and certification.
